Shelved Till November – Tree Management on Development Sites

Tree management on development sites

The subject of addressing Tree Management on Development Sites – Local Planning Scheme No.3 Amendment and Policy – Initiation, at tonight’s Community and Development Committee meeting didn’t get very far unfortunately.

This item was listed in tonight’s agenda under “MEMORANDUM OF OUTSTANDING BUSINESS”, (item 3 at the beginning of the meeting).

These items only get discussed if a Councillor wants to raise a question.  Councillor Samantha Jenkinson, was the only person who  had a question. She was clearly frustrated and wanted some clarity around when this issue would actually be dealt with?  The officers response was “in November”. It was Samantha Jenkinson who initially raised the motion in February 2015.  See pages 160-181 of the Minutes for the full report.

According to Mayor Italiano, who I spoke to briefly a bit later tonight, it will be raise in a Community and Development Committee meeting in November and there will there is no workshop planned in the mean time.

So more trees will be lost unnecessarily and the Urban Heat Island Effect will worsen.

The item was then raised at the Community and Development Committee meeting on the 23rd of June 2015, on page 7 of the Agenda, appearing identical to the entry pictured above.

This issue will be raised at our meeting tomorrow night.

This tree was right on the western boundary of a property on North Beach Road. It shaded the entire block from the hot afternoon sun. The property was cleared and subdivided into three blocks. The developer did not bother to wait and ask the future buyers if they wanted the tree or not?
